The Department of Asian & African Languages and Literature
at Duke University is pleased to announce a major international
conference entitled "China in the "Post" socialist
Era: Literary and Cultural Approaches" to be held February
13, 2002 at Duke University. The economic and political
transformations in China since the 1980s have been dramatic. However,
the conceptual and cultural implications are in many cases yet-to-be-fully
comprehended. The "post" in post-socialism does not
signify the end of state socialism, but the after-effect of socialist
imaginary in the cultural production and consumption of contemporary
China. This is an historical opportunity to reflect and map the
various theoretical approaches on the state of Chinese cultural
studies, with particular regard to the resilience of Chinese socialism
and the effects of global capitalism. Several of the panels will
assess the socialist past and the predicament of the "post"-socialist
present. We also invite paper proposals on work exploring these
issues throughout the broad sweep of twentieth-century China."
A roundtable discussion will explore future areas of analysis
and inquiry.
Please send a 250-word (maximum) abstract of proposed paper to gbwcows@duke.edu.
The deadline for submission is December 1, 2001. For further information please contact: China/"Post" Socialist Conference, Asian & African Languages and Literature, 2101 Campus Dr. Box 90414, Duke University, Durham, NC 27708-0414; Phone: (919) 684-4309; Fax: (919) 681-7871.
